You Already Use Plant Medicine (You Just Don’t Call It That)

Most people imagine plant medicine as something distant.

A different lifestyle. A niche interest.

Something practiced by other people in eccentric homes, with unusual amounts of shelves, too many jars, and something called a pestle and mortar.

Ok that just described my home but here’s the quiet truth: You already use plant medicine.

You just call it coffee. Tea. Chocolate. Spices. Skincare. A cup of chamomile before bed that Grandma brewed when tummies were unsettled.

This isn’t about converting anyone to an “herbal path.

”No vows, robes, secret handshakes or log cabins in the woods. Sorry to disappoint.

It’s just about noticing what’s already here.

Remembering what you already are.

And coming back to what you already know.

The Myth of “Normal” vs “Herbal”

Somewhere along the way, an invisible line was created:

Normal life on one side.

Herbalism on the other.

On one side: routines, habits, and comforts.

On the other: tinctures, Latin names, and a vague feeling that you need to hug trees if you’re going to take part. (I do actually advise the occasional tree hug. It really is quite beautiful)

But that line isn’t real. It’s cultural. And it’s recent. (And possibly drawn by someone who really liked pills.)

Coffee Is a Plant With a Job

Coffee isn’t neutral. It sharpens focus. Lifts mood.

Stimulates the nervous system.

That’s not accidental. That’s plant intelligence interacting with your body.

When you reach for coffee in the morning, you’re not just consuming a beverage. You’re choosing a plant to help you shift state. You’re basically saying, “Dear plant, please turn me into a functioning human.”

That is plant medicine.

Tea Isn’t Just a Drink — It’s a Signal

Green tea, black tea, herbal tea…they all do something.

They calm. They warm. They focus. They soothe

You don’t need to know why they work to feel the effect. Your body already understands the language.

Plants communicate through chemistry. Humans respond through feeling. No belief system required. No pre-or-sub-scription plan needed.

Chocolate, Spices & Mood

Chocolate changes mood. Spices warm digestion. Ginger wakes the body. Cinnamon stabilises. Mint refreshes.

Across cultures, plants were chosen not just for flavour but for how they made people feel.

Long before labels. Long before supplements. Long before marketing departments decided everything needed a heroic font.

Skincare Is Herbalism Wearing a Modern Outfit

Look at the ingredient list on your skincare:

Aloe. Calendula. Rose. Chamomile. Lavender.

Plants soothing skin. Reducing inflammation. Supporting repair.

No one calls this “alternative.” No one hesitates. No one says, “I don’t believe in aloe.”

Yet it’s the same principle: plants supporting human systems. Just with flashy packaging.

The Night-Time Ritual You Don’t Question

Chamomile before bed. A warm cup. A familiar calm.

A soothed state of being.

It’s just common sense.(And possibly the only thing standing between you and scrolling until 1:47 a.m.)

That’s how plant medicine used to live: inside daily rhythms, not separated into categories.

Herbalism Isn’t a Leap — It’s a Recognition

The shift isn’t from non-herbal to herbal. The shift is from unconscious use-to conscious relationship.

From: “This helps me.”

To: “I notice what helps me, and why.”

That’s it. No rules. No pressure. No identity change required.

Why This Matters Now

Modern life is fast, synthetic, and loud. Our bodies are still ancient, subtle, and responsive.

Plants sit at that meeting point. They don’t demand belief. They don’t force outcomes. They don’t send push notifications.

They work with us. Quietly, patiently, consistently.

A Different Way to See It

You don’t need to start using plant medicine. You already are.

The invitation is simply to notice:

  • What plants are already part of your life

  • How they affect you

  • What your body responds to

  • And how you can continue to benefit from exploring the wondrous universe of herbs and plant medicine

That awareness is the beginning, and for most people, it’s enough.

At Herbs For Lions, we’re not here to pull people onto a path. We’re here to remind them they’re already walking one.

Just with plants beside them.
